Systemic inflammation most often goes unnoticed. It is silent and insidious. It is an inflammatory reaction without clinical signs, initiated and sustained by our Western lifestyles (excess sugar, fat, sedentary lifestyle, stress, pollution, smoking, etc.) and the cause of numerous pathologies (diabetes, skin diseases, osteoarthritis, cancer, etc.).
Explanations
The process of inflammation is a natural defense system implemented by the human body to protect itself against external aggressions: destroying the aggressors and repairing the body's cells. We are often familiar with acute inflammation: following a direct attack (wound, cut), the body defends itself, and the inflammation manifests itself through acute symptoms (pain, redness, heat, swelling). But sometimes things go into overdrive, and the immune system attacks non-toxic elements: this is an allergy. In other, rarer cases, our immune cells turn against us and attack our own organs: these are autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, etc.
This is what we call chronic or low-grade inflammation: systemic, low-intensity inflammation that never goes away and is not a brief, immediate response to an attack. In short: it's as if inflammation, instead of being a sudden and salutary blaze, becomes a slow-burning fire, slowly consuming the body, unnoticed. The inflammatory state is certainly less intense, but its near-permanence ultimately has deleterious consequences for the body.

Causes
Numerous factors (stress, smoking, infections contracted in utero, pollution, diet, etc.) are suspected of causing or aggravating this chronic inflammatory condition. Like so many aggressions that, adding fuel to the embers, begin to quietly erode certain tissues or organs. And this is the link that connects the dots: all these factors help establish a biological bridge between our modern lifestyle and the diseases that are, precisely, on the rise at the beginning of the 21st century (diabetes, cancer, skin diseases, weight problems, intolerances, Crohn's disease, etc.)
Here are some factors :
- Poor diet linked to food intolerances
- Intestinal hyperpermeability
- Chronic stress
- The presence of pollution and irritants (tobacco, etc.)
- Oxidative stress
- Overweight and obesity, due to the presence of adipose tissue releasing pro-inflammatory substances
Symptoms
Chronic inflammation is very difficult to detect because there are few or no apparent symptoms. However, the onset of certain pathologies can lead us to this pathology:
- obesity and type 2 diabetes
- cardiovascular diseases
- digestive disorders with alternating diarrhea and constipation, Crohn's disease
- chronic joint diseases: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis
- gout
- cancer
- polycystic ovarian syndrome or endometriosis
- skin diseases (acne, psoriasis)
- depressive syndromes
Tests can confirm the diagnosis (CRP, C-reactive protein, interleukin-6).
Chronic inflammation
Pro-inflammatory foods to avoid
- Excess sugar: sweet desserts, pastries, white bread, alcohol, etc. Choose foods with a low glycemic index (article) and be careful of hidden sugars (prepared meals, refined foods, etc.)
- Bad fats: too much saturated fat, too much cooked fat, too much omega-6 (pizzas, pastries, processed products, sunflower oil, corn, etc.)
- Red meat
- Gluten: wheat-based foods (bread, rice, pasta), rye
- Alcohol (preferably red wine)
- Dairy products: milk, yogurt, cream, cheese (except hard cheeses)
- Strong cooking
Anti-inflammatory foods
- Good fats (article): oils rich in omega-3 (olive, flax, rapeseed, walnut, camelina, hemp), fish, walnuts, avocado
- Vitamin D: cod liver oil, salmon, eggs, beef liver, hard cheese (lactose-free)
- Vitamin B12: fish, shellfish, liver (beef, pork, chicken)
- Vitamin A: butter (raw, organic, barrate), liver, fish, eggs
- Selenium: organic Brazil nuts
- Genistein: soy (organic – yogurts, milk, seeds, tofu, etc.)
- Dietary fiber: fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes
- Cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale
- Probiotics: Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347, B. lactis CECT 8145, and Lactobacillus Rhamnosus CECT 8361
- Spices and herbs: turmeric (best absorbed with ginger or black pepper), ginger, green tea (infused or matcha)
- Steam or slow cook (below 150°C)
THE IMPORTANCE OF CONTROLLING INFLAMMATION
While short-term inflammation is a necessary and healthy response to injury, recurring inflammation due to prolonged stressors can block a healthy inflammatory response in an overactive cycle. If the body is unable to restore balance, sustained inflammation can reduce the ability of stem cells to find affected tissues, compromising the body's ability to repair itself.
Cyactiv is a proprietary formula that helps balance and calm systemic inflammation associated with a multitude of health conditions. Balancing inflammation throughout the body facilitates the delivery of stem cells to affected tissues*.
Clinical studies show that Cyactiv helps balance multiple types of inflammation, promoting a fully active lifestyle.*
PRODUCT PEDAGOGY | Inflammation
What is inflammation?
Inflammation manifests as redness, swelling, tenderness, warmth, and impaired function in an area of the body.
For example, when there's a cut, injury, or infection, specific substances are released to increase blood flow to that area and attract immune cells and adult stem cells so they can perform their functions and repair the tissue.
Once the inflamed area heals, things return to normal. However, if the affected area doesn't fully repair and heal, the inflammation persists and can become systemic and silent.
Here are some examples:
Waking up in the morning with knee pain, discomfort, and stiffness in the hips, shoulders, or neck. You may have trouble turning your head to back up your car, lifting your arms to hang up the laundry, or turning over in bed at night.
These are all examples of inflammation you can feel. When you have inflammation you can feel, you can be sure you also have inflammation you can't feel.
For example, in the blood vessels, liver, lungs, heart, etc. Where there is no pain, it's systemic inflammation, and it's a factor that fuels many of the most feared diseases of aging.
How does inflammation affect adult stem cells?
It prevents adult stem cells from correctly identifying tissues that need repair.

Cyactiv is a patented spirulina extract standardized to a phycocyanin content greater than 30%. Phycocyanin works synergistically with other compounds in the extract to calm and balance inflammation throughout the body.
Cyactiv is a spirulina-based dietary supplement derived from a unique filtration process that concentrates the phycocyanin.
The extraction process to produce Cyactiv is exclusively water-based and does not include any solvents or synthetic compounds. The phycocyanin concentration is >30%. Cyactiv is on average four times more concentrated in phycocyanin than standard spirulina. The drying process is carried out at low temperatures to preserve all of Cyactiv's nutritional properties.
The filtration process and drying steps are patented and remain exclusive to Cerule; they have been the subject of many years of research and development. This expertise allows the company to control the process, from raw material to finished product, by implementing high-level quality control standards at every stage of the process.
The benefits of Cyactiv consumption were evaluated in three different clinical studies, which were published in peer-reviewed journals (Jensen et al., 2016a; Jensen et al., 2016b; Jensen et al., 2015).
CYACTIV
Arthrospira platensis, also known as spirulina, is a blue-green algae like AFA (Aphanizomenon flos aquae). It provides a wide variety of micronutrients and macronutrients and contains specific active compounds such as phycocyanin, which produces the blue pigment of blue-green algae.
Spirulina is cultivated and harvested in sunny regions of the world such as the United States, Greece, Spain, Japan, and India (Karkos et al., 2011). It is recognized for its nutritional richness in macro and micronutrients. It is composed of over 60% protein and 14% carbohydrates.
It is a very good source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, essential amino acids, and micronutrients such as iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and selenium. It is used in nutritional supplements worldwide.
Spirulina is a good source of phenolic compounds and beta-carotenes, two classes of antioxidants. It supports the immune system (Finamore et al., 2017) and helps maintain vitality.
After more than two decades of experience in agriculture and aquatic harvesting, Cerule has become an expert in the production of exclusive and unique extracts.
Recently, Cerule expanded its production capabilities to include spirulina processing to isolate phycocyanin and other active compounds found in spirulina.
